“Hey,” I say. “Want to go upstairs and see my bedroom? I’m in Johnny’s room now, you know.”

“Poor Johnny,” Elizabeth says. “So far from home. A year ago I never would have thought all this could be happening.”

“I know. But I don’t think Johnny or Tommy would want us to be sad all the time.”

“If you can help yourself,” Elizabeth says. “But I know what you mean. Look at Aunt Mary Lee. She has more than I do to be sad about. Uncle Walter is already in the fighting.”

“That’s true. And maybe the war will be over before Johnny finishes his training and gets sent off on a ship. And before Tommy gets finished too. It can’t last long.”

“I wish I could believe that. But I know you’re right. For the sake of the baby I should try to be calm and happy. People say that influences the baby, you know.”

“Ah,” I say.

What I know about babies can fit in a thimble, but I don’t let on. I’m so glad to be talking to my big sister.

“Come on, then,” I say. “We need to make that baby happy. Let’s go see my new bedroom.”

Elizabeth stays with us all afternoon. We eat the last slivers of my birthday cake at about four o’clock. It’s a tea party, Aunt Mary Lee says.
